Why does the joint ache in the morning?

A knee, hip, or shoulder may ache after decades of work. Old injuries and a busy day can add to the ache.

Cartilage can wear, and repeated strain can make a tendon ache. The joint may feel stiff after sleep or a long rest.

Some days are easier than others, and that can be normal. What matters is whether soreness keeps you from moving as usual.

What can help at home?

Ease back from the task that set off the ache. Light motion often beats spending the whole day in a chair.

Heat may ease morning stiffness, while ice may calm soreness after activity. Use either for a short spell and protect your skin.

Using a brace or cane can reduce strain while you move. Ask your own doctor before changing medicine or starting hard exercise.

What if the soreness does not settle?

When aches return or limit your day, arrange an exam. A hot, badly swollen, or hard-to-use joint needs prompt care.

A meta-analysis of 73 articles covering 5,895 patients quantified the PLACEBO response to intra-articular injection in knee osteoarthritis: statistically and clinically significant improvements in pain, function and quality of life at 1, 3 and 6 months, with responder rates above 50% at each of those points, declining by 12 months. The placebo response was stronger in trials with more female participants and in more recently published trials. This is why an uncontrolled 'our patients improved' figure carries almost no information.
